A little unconventional, but I laugh every time I think of what Greek Choruses might have been like in comparison... Plus I ADORE this song. The music in Legally Blonde is really well done.

Today.... I am a horse.
Fiddler on the Roof. Sounds crazy, no? Well at SFS, crazy runs through our blood, and in my opinion it paid off this weekend. I decided to list what I consider to be the top six reasons why this show just worked.
REASONS TO GIVE US A STANDING OVATION
Authenticity:The musical is set in early 20th century Russia, in a jewish shtetl. Not only did we slave away to create an authentic atmosphere of Russia, using the birch tree branches for the backdrop, but we also mastered the soncentric circle of the Jewish home and life, from the mezuzah on the doorframe to the great menorah. I think that with the amount of help we had, from historical background to things brought from russia to experts on the prayers truly helped us bring the audience into our world. more importantly, I think it bring the actors into their roles. I know that when I walked into my kitchen and smelled the freshly baked bread on the counter, it brought me into Golde's kitchen, not a set on a stage. Most likely the audience didnt even know the bread was there under the cloth.

Chemistry:
The musical is a patchwork of many interconnected love stories, and each one has a different flavor. I feel like each couple worked through any awkward lines and developed a strong identity as a couple. The pairings often didnt know each other well (or at all) before production began, but by closing night were so comfortable with each other, the audience celebrated when the pairing were allowed to wed, or mourned when they were denied. The family chemistry excelled too, such as between all five of the daughters (though they couldn't have looked more different!) and all of the smaller family units. This show would have failed abysmally if the pairings and families weren't believable.

Resources:
It is said time and time again, the amount of resources this school maintains is incredible. I feel so blessed to be able to perform on a stage the size of the Lyso Center and wear costumes made to measure. I love being able to see a set pop up in the matter of weeks becasue we have so many great technicians and volunteers. We have many microphones, automated lights, and makeup materials. There is so much at the school to use and I think we coordinated all of these technical aspects to the best of our abilities in the show.
Technical proficiency abound in "The Dream" |
Second String:
This show could not have been possible without the OUTSTANDING actors that took on supporting roles in this show. Fiddler is a musical that often relies on the minor characters for comic relief. the actors who taker on these roles have to be just a proficient in acting, singing and dancing as any lead. Often these smaller roles are the one that people remember when they leave the theatre, with there witty one-liners or crazy costumes. They are the icing and candles on the cake of the show, when the leade serve as a strong foundation for the entire cast.

Solidarity
As many people in the cast have noted, this show has really brought the actors and tech together in a large family. I have been in one other mainstage production at SFS, but the dynamic was entirely different. I feel that part of our success can be attributed to the constant support and love that our cast held for each other, helping each other on stage and oof. Call me sentimental, but a show filled with hatred and a lack of unity doesn't feel like as much of a victory.

MASK DESIGN
Hello!
In response to our newly assigned project, I designed a couple different masks, but this is the one I've begun assembling. I've taken pictures along the way, and I'll post those when it's finished.... but for now here is the rough sketch on Word!
